Mission 8: The Hooded Man

Once you arrive out in the car park it is time to trek through the infested city again. As you regain control, you will be attacked by two of satan's soldiers. These fast and damaging enemies haven't got any easier unfortunately so you will need to employ a hit and run strategy to deal damage and avoid their hits as much as you can. AoE attacks are too weak to be much good here so stick to the single target moves. Once you are done (and the suckers have exploded), head for the exit with the arrow on the mini map.

The place you arrive at should look familiar, the front of Zobek's building. A few possessed civilians will be rummaging nearby. Engage them and get back some of the health you probably just lost from the soldiers. Head out of the courtyard and turn right to find a fenced off path. Mist through the bars and travel along the path until you reach a large archway with a grapple point on it. Continue through and drop down the platforms on the other side.

A ramp will take you amongst the pipes.

Life Gem: Before dropping down to the enemies below, keep circling around to find a grapple point and a pain box above.

Possessed civilians will be milling below so drop down and say hi if you want. Otherwise, circle around to the grapple point and jump up to the catwalk. A barred fence will not stop you here. Travel along the catwalk until you reach the fan. Mist up and float up to the platform above. Jump across to the ladder and climb up to run into two riot officers. Smash those shields and air juggle their asses with the knock up attack and guillotine move. This takes them down in just a few seconds.

Head through the nearby cracked pipe and float up through the grate. Jump up another ladder and open the door handle at the top. In here you can progress towards the arrow by jumping up and climbing until you reach the light once more. Jump through the hole in the wall to meet a bunch of trouble.

Two riot police will face off against you but that isn't the problem. The problem is the riot mech alongside them. This beast has multiple projectile attacks, multiple unblockable melee attacks and is armoured (thus normal attacks won't work). Quickly take out the riot police with your aerial attack + guillotine combo so you can concentrate solely on the mech. The first job is to remove that armoured plate on the front. Swap to your chaos claws and start swinging (dodging away when it winds up a melee attack). It does take quite a few hits before the plate breaks, but keep at it.

Once the plate is off you can use any of your weapons to damage the mech, just keep out of the way of it's attacks. When it falls down and starts venting steam, keep pounding away to defeat it. Once it is done, a third riot officer will help you knock down the gate to continue on. Head through the smashed gate and into the building beyond. Climb up until you see the grapple point above and jump up to the higher floor. Pull the power lever up here and head through the now open door.

Jump between the giant banners and then drop down to the road.

Memorial: In a small tunnel next to where you land

As you head up the road, you'll catch your first glimpse of the hooded man. Unfortunately he is a bit better at making an exit than you. It seems the big ugly has taken a liking to him and decides to follow him. This leaves his minions here to slow you down. *2 seconds later* Ok, let's go.

Chaos Gem: In a nearby tunnel after defeating the two minions.

Memorial: Next to the tunnel for the previous collectible.

If you need it there is a font back near where you dropped down to the road, metal bars will block the way but should pose no problem. When you are ready to go, follow the giant demon. Open the golden hatch. Pull the lever in the tunnel and use the hatch at the end. A purple trail will mark the path you have to follow here. A soldier of Satan and gun wielding possessed citizens will be waiting for you outside. Clear the minions first and then concentrate on the soldier.

Once the road is clear, use a chaos bomb to knock down the nearby ladder on the side of the building. Just a note that there is a magic font through a crack in a nearby wall (to the right of the big central pillar). If you proceed down the street you will have to deal with another soldier and his two lackeys. There is a health statue through a set of metal bars here as well.

Memorial: Continue down the road to find this at the end

When you are ready, head up the fire escape to continue. Climb up to the window above and you will arrive on a catwalk overlooking some possessed citizens. You can drop down to say g'day or use the swinging platform to reach the upper areas.

Life Gem: Partway up the swinging platforms section. Drop down to grab the pain box.

Memorial: On the ground floor in the corner of the room where the possessed citizens are.

Continue your climb to the top level and jump out onto the roof above. Some possessed citizens will try to stop you here. *Splatting noises*.

Void Gem: You can head back into the building via a nearby doorway and drop down the elevator shaft to find this pain box.

Use your chaos bomb to lower the drawbridge and travel across. Well, that could have gone better. Two possessed civilians (one with a grenade launcher) will appear and try to blow you up. After they are dealt with, freeze the waterfall and use the grapple points to climb the building. Once inside, three possessed citizens show up (two with shotguns) you know what to do. The next task is to turn on the nearby fan, but it needs power. Close by is a metal bar door. Mist through and freeze the flames with your void projectile. At the back is the power switch. Flip it and head back to the main area. As you turn on the fan, more enemies will appear but you can skip them by gently floating upwards.

Upstairs, use your chaos projectile to light the top of a giant gas tank watch the cut-scene. When you arrive in the next building (via an awesome mode of transportation), Don't drop down through the hole in the floor as it leads back to the street outside.

Challenge Item: Head back to the street outside and climb up the new lot of grapple holds on the street just outside where you emerge. The pile is partway up.

Pull the lever to open the door in front of you. This opens up into a massive library with a soldier and his lackeys below. Deal with all the enemies here (including those on the balcony and head to the other part of the room to meet the hooded man again. And he exits again. Great. Leaving you to deal with Mr Ugly.

Boss: Abaddon

Attacks

Tail Spike:  He will stab his tail down into the ground and launch a subterranean spike along the ground to where you are, and erupt.  If you are hit, it will impale you and you will need to do a QTE to free yourself.  When he stabs his tail down, he will also stab his arm down, which is a lot more obvious.  Dodge to the side as it approaches you to avoid it.

Summon Spines:  He will slam his arms down into the ground to go onto all fours and start launching spines into the air which will bombard an area around him.  This will summon enemies which are easy to avoid or defeat and get some free life.  Your aoe attack will work well on these.  Abaddon will also carelessly hit them with his other attacks.

Swipe:  His standard swipe attack.  He can swing multiple times with this attack.  It is fairly quick with no tell, but has a short range and is easy to avoid.

Cleave:  He will wind up a big swipe raising his arm all the way up and smashing it down on the ground.  When this attack starts, it will show the unblockable symbol.  It has a fairly long wind up time, so avoiding it should be easy.  Dodge to the side to avoid it.

Backhand:  He will turn away, turn back, and then backhand (or claw) anything in front of him.  This will also launch a wave in front of him.  Dodge to the side to avoid.

Stomp:  He will raise his foot and bring it down, causing a shockwave which will knock you back and over.  Jump over the shockwave towards it to avoid.

Acid Breath:  He will go down on all fours and start spewing acid in a line in front of him.  If you are in the air, or try to jump over it, it will still hit you.  Dodge to the side to avoid.

Enraged Slam:  Once you do enough damage to him, camera control is taken away to show him recoiling.  He will then scream and the unblockable symbol will appear and he will start slamming the ground in front of him while moving forward.  Once he stops, he will scream, and you can continue the fight.  While he is enraged, his heart is protected and you cannot hurt him.  This whole sequence isnt very long, but the damage if he connects is high.

Abaddon (despite his fearsome appearance) is more of a mini boss. However, getting complacent here can cost you a large chunk of health. The only point that takes damage on him is his glowing green organ. This means that ground based attacks are out, because it is up in the air. Use your aerial attacks to begin dealing damage. A lot of his quicker attacks are also quite close range, so useing your whip will allow you to stay safe and dodge away more successfully.

His summoned allies are just the regular possessed citizens, so use your crowd clear attacks to get rid of them quickly and return your attention to Abaddon. Each time a third of his health is depleted, he will use his enraged slam attack. This protects him from damage until it is over, so just dodge away until the fight resumes. Other than that it is just a matter of bashing him with aerial attacks until he falls. Or at least his face falls off with the help of Dracula.

After defeating Abaddon, head for the arrow through the small set of rooms.

Memorial: In the corner of the room you can pull the lever to activate power.

Looks like we aren't done here, the hooded man has left another trail. As soon as you move forward, two riot mechs will drop down in front of you. Two riot police are also in the area so you have your work cut out for you. The only good news is that these mechs don't have the protective armour panels, so you can just start hitting them. Unfortunately running away isn't an option as they will shoot you down if you try to climb away. Choose whatever weapon works for you and start smashing away (don't forget your items as you may need them here).

Chaos Gem: Head left and use the grapple points to reach a pain box.

Void Gem: Down the far end of the road.

Once you are done, if you approach the end of the road, another mech will drop down (Come on!). You don't have to trigger it luckily, instead use the grapple chain on the pillar in the middle of the road to climb up.

Memorial: After the first chain, drop down in front of the swinging platform to find the memorial on a lower balcony.

Use the swinging platform to enter the window and walk down to the bell tower.

Chaos Gem: Climb up to the top of the tower to find the pain box.

Drop down to the base of the tower and mist through the bars. The hooded man will be waiting for you within.

Boss: Hooded Man

Attacks – Phase 1

Aoe Slash:  He will start swinging the chain behind him and bring it around for an aoe attack.  He then has a brief delay before bringing it back around the other way for another aoe attack.  Jump the chain, or dodge behind him to avoid it.

Chain Slash:  He will start to swing the chain behind him vertically and slash the chain at you.  Dodge to the side to avoid.  Note:  In Phase 2, this will sometimes change to being an unblockable attack, with the symbol appearing once as he swings the chain behind him.  Also in Phase 2, an additional swing is sometimes added.

Stake Throw:  The unblockable symbol will appear once and he will raise his hand and throw a stake at you.  Dodge to the side to avoid it.

Chain Stab:  The unblockable symbol will appear twice, and he will quickly stab the chain towards you.  Dodge to the side to avoid it.

Chain Spin:  The unblockable symbol will appear once above his head, and he will then charge forward and spin his chain vertically for a few seconds.  Dodge to the side to avoid.  If you are not perfect blocking, then this is your best opportunity to attack him.

Due to your weakened powers, you have lost control of the void sword and chaos claws. Whoopee. So in this phase, you whip is the only way to go. One of the best methods for damaging the hooded man are to perform perfect blocks on his blockable attacks and then smack away at him. If you have problems with this, the other big chance is when he performs his chain spin move. This leaves him vulnerable for a good 3-4 seconds after the attack initiates. You can also damage him between attacks (of course) but he can and will block you regularly. This is probably one of the biggest tests of your combat skills so far in regards to blocking and dodging. After taking away half a bar of health, you will enter the second phase of the fight.

Attacks – Phase 2 (All Previous Attacks Included)

Holy Water:  He will put his hand to his pocket, raise it above him, and throw it down, causing a medium fire nova around him.  It will also cause him to gain a shield partially around him that will enable him to use his other more powerful abilities and reduces damage taken drastically.  This will only last a certain time, but he can use this ability again.

Fire Nova (Requires Holy Water):  He will jump stupidly high into the air, and then slam down, causing a massive fire nova which will knock you down.  Jump to avoid it.

Flaming Chain (Requires Holy Water):  He will swing his arm behind him and bring it down hard, causing a line of fire to run along the ground in front of him.  He will do this multiple times in your direction, one after another.  Dodge to the side to avoid it.

Flaming Punch:  He will pull his fist back and an unblockable symbol will appear.  He will then punch forwards with flames.  Dodge to the side to avoid.

Blade Beam:  Camera control will be taken from you to show him charging an attack with an unblockable symbol.  A wide horizontal beam will launch towards your position.  Jump to avoid it.

This phase is similar to the first in that dodging and performing perfect blocks are the best way to go. However, his new shield technique (holy water) provides him with additional dangerous attacks. His shield also reduces damage by a hefty margin as well. Combine this with his annoying tendency to block most of your attacks and your dps takes a nosedive. One of the ways to bypass this is to use the chaos claws to break through his guard and then deal damage with your whip. Now that you have the void sword back, you may also want to regenerate some health. Aside from that the strategy is pretty much the same as before, avoid the attacks and dodge away.

Attacks – Phase 3 (No previous attacks)

Fist Of Fire:  After a long windup of raising his fist, he will bring it down to the ground, causing a massive fire nova.  Jump away to avoid this.

Note From The Editor:  This Phase was completed too quickly to see any of his other attacks.  Even this one was only glimpsed.

Break the pillars. Seriously, that's it. When you break a pillar, he recoils. This gives you plenty of time to break the next one and so on.

After he shrinks back to normal, a final QTE sequence will begin. Complete this successfully and the battle is over.

Looks like you picked up another traveling companion. Follow your companion down to the lower platform and open the door. Climb up the grapple chain to your right and then turn into mist at the top to be blown over to Victor's location. Another grapple chain and you will be up on the platform with Victor again. Head into the lift

Looks like it's a brawl for the whole family. You remember that unique boss enemy you just fought? Now he's been relegated to cannon fodder. Looks like you drew the short straw as it will concentrate on solely you. Use the same techniques (stay close enough to whip and jump dodge sideways to avoid melee attacks and keep up the damage). If you move too far away, he will use his annoying projectile attacks on you so try to avoid doing that.

Once the place is clear, watch the cut-scenes and then abruptly things will go bad.

Boss: Inner Dracula

Attacks – Phase 1

Shockwave:  Using his wings, he will fly up into the air, and slam down, causing a massive shockwave of blood.  Jump to avoid it.

Slash Slam:  He will pull one fist back, and do a spin slash horizontally twice, and then raise his arm with an unblockable symbol to smash it down.  The smash will cause a medium blood shockwave.  Dodge away from the swings, and jump or dodge to avoid the shockwave.  If one of the early swings hits you, he will stop the attack.

Quad Slam:  He will raise one arm with an unblockable symbol and bring it down in your direction.  He will do this four times, unless one of them hit you.  Once he hits you, he will stop, but thats not really a good strategy.  Dodge to the side to avoid.  If your timing is good, you can get one or two hits before needing to dodge again.

Body Spike:  He will lean back, and pull both arms back, and then quickly lean forward, smashing his arms together.  This will cause spikes to burst from his body before disappearing.  This is a knockback attack if you are too close.  This attack is fairly fast, so you wont get a lot of time to see the tell.  Dodge back to avoid.

Blood Blade:  He will raise his fist and punch the ground, which will launch a projectile in a straight line towards you underneath the blood.  Dodge to the side to avoid it.

Blood Spray (After Entering Phase 2):  He will raise one arm slightly, and bring the other to his mouth before spraying blood in front of him in a line.  Dodge away to avoid.

Blood Serpent (After Entering Phase 2):  He will raise his claw above his head, and then smack it into the ground and keep it there.  A creature will then start heading from his hand towards you, showing itself via ripples and occasionally breaking the surface.  If it reaches you, it will break the surface, grab you, and you will have to complete a QTE to escape.  It does not move fast, so it is fairly easy to avoid by running and dodging.  While the serpent is moving, Inner Dracula will stand there and let you wail on him, until he pulls his claw back out of the ground.

Inner Dracula can be a surpisingly difficult boss to deal with due to his speed and constant close proximity to you. He will repeatedly move closer to you as most of his attacks are melee. Timing your dodges and jumps to preserve your health as much as possible is the key to staying alive. This is because you will have to fight this form several times as well as his second form. The large hulking form will take damage pretty easily, it's having the opportunity to cause it is the difficult part. Once you deal enough damage to this form he will split open and you will have to face his real form. After the first time you return from fighting the second version of Inner Dracula, he will begin using two new attacks.

Attacks – Phase 2

Blood Siphon:  He will pull up a small vortex of blood, and then continue to siphon it towards him.  The area it is being siphoned from will move slowly towards your position.  If it reaches you, it will slowly drain your health, reduce your movement speed, and prevent you from dodging out of it.  Run or dodge away from it to avoid.  If you are not too far away, and you hit him with a Chaos Bomb, he will stop, and start vomitting blood in a spray above you.  This will not harm you, but will give you a chance to attack him.

To defeat the boss, you need to fully deplete his health in this form. To do this, you will need to use projectile attacks to hit him. Chaos bombs work best and take a good chunk of health. You can only deal a third of his health per time you fight this form. Once you have dealt this damage or enough time has passed, you will return to battling against the larger form.
