Factions and Currencies

FACTIONS:

Factions are groups you can align your character with in various ways to increase your reputation with them and as a result buy specialist items from them when it is high enough,

Cryptarch (Items) – The Cryptarch is classed as a faction, you will gain reputation with him by bringing him items to decipher (uncommon "green" items provide a small boost to reputation, while higher rarities provide larger boosts). As a result of this, Cryptarch reputation will grow naturally as you play the game and provide him with items to decode.

Unlike other factions however, you do not earn a currency and use it to purchase things from him. Instead, every time you level up your Cryptarch faction rank (after level three), you will be given a reward consisting of random engrams. These can be of legendary quality (if you are at or above the level requirement of eighteen) and are given to you at the postmaster after each faction level gain.

Note: You can also buy his engrams (green or higher) to gain a small amount of experience towards your level. Due to the expensive nature of the items however, this is only useful in gaining a small boost to reach a new level, not as a way of gaining levels at a time.

Vanguard (PvE) – The Vanguard are the default group your character is part of. Vanguard items can be bought from the character type masters in the Hall of Guardians area of the tower. The currency used to buy items from them is Vanguard Marks (earning methods and details explained below in the Vanguard Marks section).

Each level of rank unlocks new items for purchase from the vendors. Rank one allows appearance items for sale. Rank two unlocks armour items (helms, chest armours, gloves and boots. Rank three unlocks weapons. Gaining reputation with the Vanguard faction is relatively easy, but can be time consuming (as are most factions).

Reputation can be earned by completing patrol missions, daily events, area events (random occurrences while patrolling), strikes, raids and bounties. Combining multiple earning methods is generally the fastest method of earning rep. For example, completing patrols with several bounties active while also attempting any patrol events that appear. Completing strike playlists with bounties active is another good method as well.

Crucible (PvP) – The two crucible vendors (Shaxx and Arcite) can be found in the hall of guardians. To earn reputation for this faction, you can participate in PvP matchmaking and/ or complete crucible bounties. The currency used to buy items from them is Crucible Marks (earning methods and details explained below in the Crucible Marks section).

Each level of rank unlocks new items for purchase from the vendors. Rank one allows appearance items for sale. Rank two unlocks armour items (helms, chest armours, gloves and boots. Rank three unlocks weapons. Gaining reputation with the Crucible faction can vary in difficulty depending on the skill level of the player and which mode they use (clash, rumble and so on).

Reputation can best be earned by combining crucible play (any mode) with bounties at the same time. Exhaust the passive completion ones first before attempting the harder and more situational ones. For example, kill twenty-five warlocks is a passive bounty. Get five post mortem kills is more difficult to acquire and may require you to adjust you skills and strategy to a complete it.

Once the guardian reaches level twenty, they can support a crucible faction for a separate reputation level and new items. To do so, the player must purchase the unique item for their class from the new crucible faction's vendor and wear it to replace general crucible reputation gains with the new crucible faction.

Future War Cult (FWC) – The vendor Lakshmi can be found in the tower hangar area. To earn reputation for this faction you need to purchase and equip the unique item for your class from the vendor (costs a few thousand glimmer) and then participate in PvP matchmaking and/or complete crucible bounties.
